Real Christmas Trees Are a Real Pain
Real Christmas9 May 2013 | 12:16 pmIt is spring and we’re growing things. Every year we plant a garden, green up the lawn and compete with this season’s version of trying to out-do the neighbors. We do the same thing with Christmas lights each fall. The neighborhood looks great and our unspoken-of competition, I’m convinced, keeps families and good neighbors together. [...] -

Day 6! Canandaigua, New York
20 May 2013 | 4:55 pmPhew it’s hot today! Started the day in Bath at Dot’s summer villa where among other creatures, squirrels rule the day!! Look, no hands! Sonnenberg Mansion Today’s place of interest was Sonnenberg (German for ‘Sunny Hill’) Gardens and Mansion, the home of Frederick and Mary Thompson. Mr Thompson was a founder and life-long director of the bank that is now called Citibank. Frederick and Mary had no children so when both had died in 1923, Mary left the estate to her nephew, Emory Clark, who in 1931 sold it to… -

20 May 2013 | 4:26 pmIt’s Victoria day! No school!! Woohoo!!! But I don’t get it… It’s to celebrate queen Victoria’s birthday? Should all royalty have a day for their birthday? Why only Queen Victoria?? I don’t get it and I’m too lazy to google it… ~ maple -
Day 5! Geneva, New York
20 May 2013 | 4:13 pmWe started the day by driving to Belhurst Castle, originally called ‘Bellehurst’ meaning beautiful forest) in Geneva for Sunday brunch. The food was excellent as were the mimosas!! We will definitely be visiting here again when we return to this part of the world at the end of our journey in July. The property that surrounds Belhurst Castle was originally the site of a Seneca Indian village and home to the Council of the Six nations of Iroquois. In May of 1824 the land came into the possession of a Mr. Joseph Fellows, a lawyer from our very own Warwickshire. In 1830 a gentleman… -
20 May 2013. It's STILL the Easter Season!
20 May 2013 | 4:07 pm______________________________ The Easter season stretches on to Pentecost, which falls on 23 June this year. That means that we have another month left in the festal time… hey, if we keep the Easter Lent for all forty days, then, it stands to reason that we should keep all fifty days of the Easter feast. God did NOT intend us to walk about with long faces and be insufferable misery-guts to all about us. Christ is risen! That’s what our religion is all about… not rules… not crusades… not marches… not politics… but Christ is Risen! It was good…

Thankful Thursday-Week 6 (5/16/13)
16 May 2013 | 7:46 amThat’s right, it is Thankful Thursday again here at Getting Real! What are you thankful for today? Come on, it only takes a minute to drop us a line and give thanks to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This week I am especially thankful for my “monkey in the middle”, my 2nd daughter, Kennedy Alexandra, who turned 15 yesterday. I was able to take the morning and afternoon off to spend more time with her. PTL! I am very thankful God gave me three wonderful girls. I wish I could say they turned out well because of my good parenting, but the truth is they are just wonderful… -
Affirmation of God: God is great!
16 May 2013 | 5:01 amToday’s Scripture: May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!” Psalm 70:4 ESV Ok, I know most of us immediately think, “God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for our food” from our childhood blessings. Is that the last time you said God is great? It is good to be reminded. Actually, David was in a bad place in Psalm 69 and 70. He says he was in the miry pit and the waters were up to his neck. Do you ever feel you are there? David was calling on God to save him and to do it quickly. He was barely… -
Thanksgiving Thursday
16 May 2013 | 4:30 amBE PARTICULAR IN YOUR THANKS TO GOD “Thank God for making you in His image… We must give thanks that he has made us reasonable creatures, capable of knowing, loving, serving, and enjoying him, and that he has not made us like the beasts that perish. We praise you, for we are fearfully and wonderfully made; and that our souls, our nobler part, know very well; for no man knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him. You have made us of that rank of beings which is a little lower than the heavenly beings and is crowned with glory and honor; for it is… -
Always? In all circumstances?
16 May 2013 | 4:00 amRejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5.16-18 This little trio of texts is one of my favourite pieces of Scripture and one that I have long had committed to memory. But as it came up before me in my Bible reading plan this morning, a great big question mark appeared over parts of it because I found myself trying to read it through the eyes of two people who are presently on my heart. The first is a very public figure whom I have never met nor am ever likely to meet. She is Katherine Welby,…

Loving Our Valentine’s Christmas Tree
14 Feb 2013 | 9:27 amOur Christmas tree is still up. The lights outside are down, the Christmas wreath is off the door and the stockings are no longer hung by the chimney with care. Loving a dog never stops
18 May 2013 | 6:53 pmHave you ever had a dog? We got our first dog when I was only 6 years old. She was a big puppy, with gigantic floppy ears, paws the size of baseballs, and a strange little waffle marking on her tail. We picked her out of the litter because she was the first to come and sniff my dad’s hand. (Which, in hindsight might have meant that she was the dumbest because my father is a rather intimidating man.) Although I barely remember it, my dad tells me that she was a pain in the butt to train. She would pee in the house and was far too energetic to sit or lay down on command. She grew to be a… -

Cancer Update
20 May 2013 | 10:39 pmBack in 2007 life was really, really good. My business was exploding, I had discovered and joined MMC in January. Then in the summer I found that I had prostate cancer. I had robotic surgery to remove my prostate. The love and encouragement that I received from my new family at MMC was something that I have always treasured and will never forget. I have seen my amazing family do the same for so many others. One of you, Aunty Mistletoe, even walked the Relay for Life for me in 2011. I have been humbled and honored to have you all as my friends. My last checkup was last May. Because of some… -

Movie Review: Star Trek Into Darkness
19 May 2013 | 9:36 pmMOVIE REVIEW: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS On my Culture Vulture blog I’ve written a movie review without plot spoilers of Star Trek Into Darkness, read it here. This is currently the #1 movie in America. Bottom line: I loved it. If possible it’s better, if not as inventive as the previous movie in the reboot released in May 2009 and reviewed by me here. I’d call it the most enjoyable movie so far this year, though I may be biased as I’ve been watching Star Trek since the summer previews in 1966 and I’ve seen this movie twice in the opening weekend. Bill Petro, your… -
History of May the Forth (be with you): Star Wars Day
3 May 2013 | 7:20 amMAY 4 For those keeping track, another geek holiday is May 4, or May the Forth taken from the benediction “May the Force be with you” made famous in the Star Wars film series. This pun intended holiday seems to have first been celebrated in Toronto, Canada in 2011. However, the use of this phrase predates this going back to the day in 1979 when Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first woman prime minister was elected. The Conservative party took out a newspaper ad in the London Evening news on May 4 that said “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. -
History of Cinco de Mayo
3 May 2013 | 4:30 amCINCO DE MAYO Cinco de Mayo is frequently regarded as the Mexican equivalent of the United States 4th of July. This is incorrect. In actuality, it is the equivalent of the “5th of May” in the Spanish language. Another misconception is that this has something to do with Mayonnaise. That too is a bum spread, as the condiment had its origin with the French, who will come into our story later. Nor does it have to do with County Mayo in Ireland, though we’ll make sure the Irish get into this story at some point. Rather, the “Battle of Cinco de Mayo” or specifically… -
History of May Day
1 May 2013 | 4:30 amMAY DAY May Day is many things to many people. Etymologically, it is a homophone (same sounding word) for the international call for help. It is a corruption of the French imperative “M’aidez” meaning “Help me!” As a holiday it is claimed by many. It is known in the pagan world as Beltane, a fertility celebration, one of the four high holidays in the pagan calendar, Samhain on October 31 is another. Beltane is the day of fire commemorating Bel or Belenos, the Celtic sun god. Indeed, in the modern Irish language, Bealtaine is the name for the month of May. The… -
History of the Liberation of Dachau — a personal view
29 Apr 2013 | 4:18 amHISTORY OF THE LIBERATION OF DACHAU On April 29, 1945… 68 years ago, toward the end of World War II the Allies captured and liberated Dachau. My father, Staff Sergeant John Petro was one of the liberators. It was one of the few stories from The War that my father told me in full. Dachau was the first “concentration camp,” originally established in March 1933 near Munich, Germany. At first Dachau held only political prisoners, but over time, more and more groups were imprisoned there. Unlike Auschwitz, it was not a “death camp” but instead was a prison camp for…
